Portland Police Department Citizens Police Academy:  The Citizens Police Academy was started in 2004. The academy was created to let the general public know what law enforcement does on a day to day basis. The academy helps answer a lot of the questions that arise about law enforcement. The academy is held once a year.

Portland Police Department Citizens Academy Alumni:  The Alumni was created by a group of graduates around 2007. This group is very active with the Portland Police Department. The Alumni meets once a month for business and participates in several activities throughout the year. The alumni operate only on what they make from bake sales and other fundraisers through the year.  They give out a scholarship once a year to a Jay County High School student. They are also a big part of the Shop With A  Badge event that is held yearly.

D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education): The Portland Police Department brought the D.A.R.E. program to Jay County in 1998. We currently have 2 certified D.A.R.E. officers. The Portland Police Department provides the D.A.R.E. program to every fifth grader in Jay County (not just Portland schools). This program operates from donations.

Jay County Drug Prevention Coalition: The Portland Police Department has been very active in this Coalition since it was created, sometime before 1999. The department has held an officers chair almost the entire time.  The Police Department has assisted and helped to make several events happen through the years. Some of these events included drug awareness panels and programs in the schools and community.

K-9 Program: In 2016 this program was brought back to the Portland Police Department. The K-9 is used as a tool to locate drugs and missing people. The K-9 is also used for presentations. To schedule a presentation for your group, call the Portland Police Department.
